I have suffered with severely dry eyes for over 18 months. The optician who did laser surgery on my eyes 3 years back prescribed Hycosan (preservative free) drops after all others failed to ease the problem with great effect. They have been much better not so sore although still dry during the night. Now under the hospital as apparently the oil glands in the lids (Meibomian Layer) do not produce oil properly, (Tear Film instability) this oil mixes with the tears to form a complete layer over the eye to stop them drying out. After telling the hospital Doctor about Hycosan he gave me a prescription for further supply but apparently the chemist said its been blacklisted by the NHS. Now I guess I will need to return to Opticians to get more unless there is another type supplied by the NHS that is preservative free. Probably real reason is Hycosan is too expensive for the good old NHS to supply!

Hi All,
Trisha - your right Hycosan isn't available on the NHS, but a very good alternative I have found is Vismed which has similar properties/ingredient/pricing to Hycosan. Vismed is available on prescription from a GP as this is what I have on prescription. You can buy Hycosan online from a number of suppliers. I got my last bottle from an ebay seller so I think it worked out a little bit cheaper.
KD - really sorry to hear about your accident and subsequent dryness. I can completely empathise with how your feeling with the dryness. Mine too is worse in the evenings. As far as coping strategies go from what I've researched it tends to be very individual. I rely solely on drops. I have used the ointments at night time when my eyes have been severe. I'm not sure if you are a heavy pc user but I developed corneal scratches when I was working excessive hours. Now I find limiting laptop usage helps if I feel my eyes are too getting too dry.
Not being able to go out in the evenings/avoiding drying atmospheres has become part of life.
Some people find using humidifiers and night time eye goggles (tranquileyes) really helpful. Flaxseed oil (available in capsule) can also help with lubrication due to the effects of the omega oils it contains (as can fish oils).
I really think it's a case of trial and error and also research - there is a wealth of information on the internet, I have had to learn so much myself as the doctor's advise seem to be limited to topical eye treatments. At least I now know of the alternatives and should I feel my eyes becoming unmanageable with my usual treatment.
Good luck in finding what works best for you.
