Hi all
I developed bleph 2.5 years ago and struggled /experimented until I found my solution(I say MY solution 'cos not everybody is the same)
> regular once a day eyelid hygiene - done at night before bed
My method of heating the lids is steaming for abouut 5 minutes
followed by squeezing along each eye lid between the finger and thumb- takes about
20 seconds, and hands must be well washed and nails short+ massaging the lids
next - cleansing with occosoft and rinsing
Then - with a Q tip i apply chloramphenicol eye ointment to the lid margins only
next- apply a smear of vasaline to outer eyelids (my lids have always been v dry)
Then bed
> Day time I use clinitas ultra 3 as needed
with this regieme i find i am symptom free most days - and if i do get a flare -up it is very
mild
I do hope this post helps somebody

Hi Stella, I'm pretty sure it was you I spoke to on the other site. I was feeling very sorry for myself, but got lots of very kind and helpful replies, yours included. I'm trying some drops called systane, which so far, seem to be working very well, although, I don't like to get too carried away with thinking it's "better", as it may just be a good run anyway, but fingers crossed. As you say, hopefully your post will help somebody, and thank you for your time.

Yes Sally it was me -
I am soo glad you have found a good eye drop in systane
That is a start
Have you got dry lids ? Vasaline on outer lids at night helps me - just a smear
Do your eye lids stick to your eye balls in the morning after sleeping ? Mine used to but the anti biotic ointment i use acts as an emmolient and has resolved this - did you ever try an ointment for night time ,lacrilube is an idea (I cant use it 'cause it has lanolin in it and i am allergic to that) Some people dont agree with ointments but if they work i would say use them sparingly
These are just ideas - problem solving one thing at a time for me was the answer
My optician demonstrated with digital photography that i had blocked glands ,so i found the most effctive way for me to unblock them ie steaming + squeezing the lids
Now my optician tells me the glands are no longer blocked but not functioning as well as they should -- Thats an improvement. Also he tells me my tear film is thin but adequet - thats an improvement too
The main thing is that i dont have symptoms like i used to and i can live quite easily with what i have got - I can forget about my eyes most of the time
I do hope you get to that place
I am still always on the look-out for anything new that might help

Hi Stella, unfortunately my joy with sustane was short lived. I had a very bad evening yesterday, and they didn't help at all. I suffer terribly when I wake up, have to unpick my eyes, can't open them naturally without a struggle, which leaves me in pain. My lid doesn't even open all the way to begin with when I wake up, which is not a nice feeling. I may try the vaseline. Somebody also suggested a sleep mask? I'll try anything. Vanity goes out of the window with this thing. I also have some goggles to wear, but haven't worked out how they work - look a bit technical!! My daughter told me I'd look like a fly!!! As always with everybody who replies to my posts, always very grateful for the time taken, and I hope you continue to improve.

Hi Sally,
I got a good laugh about your daughter saying you look like a fly with tranquileyes. My daughter calls them bug-eyes! I personally can't sleep with any kind of eye mask and I like lacrilube at night [not too much] as without it I am prone to corneal abrasions and also it helps the eyes open in the morning. The tranquileyes are fine in the evening just to relax for a while. I like Clinitis Soothe [available on prescription apparantly] and Clinitis Ultra 3 but I realise no eyedrop really deadens the pain. Just keeps the eyes moist. I would love to try Restasis but even that doesn't seem to be a miracle cure for everyone. It really is trial and error and the piggy bank topped up in case something new comes along that makes you think - this is definitely it - this is definitely gonna work this time!! Sorry I can't be more of a comfort but at least this site lets us see we are not alone.

Hi Annienicky
Thanks for your reply. i tried Lacrilube, but it just seemed to make them stick even more, but there's a possibility that I'd put too much on them, and as others have said it helps their eyes open in the morning, I may well try it again. I personally wouldn't want to try restasis, as it's a very strong drug and I think has other side effects. You can apparently get it in the UK, but from the vets!! I actually had one of the best evenings for a long time yesterday, regarding my eyes. I used the systane again, but not as many times, spacing it out - one lot morning, one mid afternoon, then another lot about 7. I really think it makes my eyes worse if I use any drops too often throuthout the day, but as I'm sure I don't need to tell you, unexplainably I can have a good period of time, where i hardly have any problems, and equally unexplainably, it comes back with added vigour. I did think about keeping a diary of everything, sleep times, diet, where I went etc, to see if there was any key to it, but I'm not very disciplined at doing things like that, but it may be worth doing. I shall keep plodding on anyway and trying to find out more, and hopefully be cured one day (ha ha)!! |

Hi ,
interesting to read everyones comments, its great to think Im are not alone ,with this painful problem,Ive been having problems with my eyes now since last August,so very very fed up with pain and how it takes over your way of life, I also had corneal abrasion on my right eye,and they did an operation to rub it down,as my eyes were ripping apart every night and on waking and the pain was unbelievable, but happy to say that is good now,but up until a few weeks ago,my eyes were still very dry and unable to open in mornings till they had been massaged, for a few minutes,I use Lacri-Lube nights, but have learnt less is better, and during the day I use lots of viscotears liquid gel which is cooling and as gel dosent go all down your face, and it turns to liquid once in eye,I was refered to Moorefield eye Hospital two monthes ago, where I have been put on Doxycycline capsules 100mg for three monthes,Im in to my third month now,and last time I visited Moorefield, they have said the Blepharitis and small cysts on my eyes have all gone, and happy to say so has the pain, and only have dry eyes now and again, they have warned me once I stop taking the tablets, that it may return, but have also been told can get back ion the tablets if nessasary,I was concerned about taking antibiotics for long periods of time, but was assured they would not harm me,as only small doses,so I have to believe them,Im now free of appointments till July 2010,unless I have any more problems,so heres hoping for pain free clear eyes, hope everyone else gets lucky too ,Romy

Hi all,
Interesting to read the comments made and the list of medicines people have used - some I recognise and some I don't. I have dry eyes and have had an ulcerated cornea in my left eye. I'm under a consultant and he's got me on steroid drops (FML - the weak ones) in the left eye which I've been on for some time, he's tried weaning me off them but each time he has the ulcer has flared up again! I'm also on Doxycycline capsules (100mg x 1 per day) and have been since October. On my consultants advice I take Aciclovir tablets (400 mg x 2 per day) and use Liquifilm Tears throughout the day and when I go to bed - phew!
The Doxycycline capsules didn't seem to be making much of an impact on my heavy/swollen eyelids to be honest and I also have a problem with an under active thyroid gland. My GP upped the dosage of the medicine I'm on for that and I feel sure it's had a effect on my eye lids - for the better! It may just be co-incidence but I've had the eye problem now for the best part of 18 months and each time I've made progress and then had a relapse it seems to co-inside with my thyroxine level needing upping. (I've had the thyroid problem for roughly the same length of time but the Drs only increase medication for this gradually). I've heard that an over active thyroid can have a detrimental effect of peoples eyes - I wonder if an under active one can also? I'm back a my consultants in Jan - I'll run it by him then.
Good luck and best wishes for 2010 to all - let's hope from here on in things improve for everyone.

Hi All,
It is very nice to know that I am not the only one suffering with this depressing condition. Unlike some of you I have only been suffering the past 8 weeks now although it seems like forever! Originally I was diagnosed with conjunctivitis and saw the optician and doctor 3 times. They kept pescribing antibiotic drops which did nothing. Finally, about two weeks ago I was sent to the local eye casualty and diagnosed with Blepharitis. I have bought the eye mask and long lasting tear gel and I have to say it is better than what the hospital reccomended. However, my problem is that my eyes are constantly streaming so I am always dabbing at them with a tissue! my vision is constantly blurred which makes work, study and life in general a nightmare and I am feeling utterly hopeless now. I dare not even try to wear my contact lenses which I am paying for every month but cannot wear. Most people seem to be talking about dry uncomfortable eyes but I just wandered if anyone else has had the same symtoms as mine, and if so how they stopped it. My eyes are dry in the mornings but its easier to make them moist rather than stop the streaming! Help!
